Eugene Campaign Kickoff

  • 688 Charnelton Street Eugene, OR, 97401 United States

Election season is right around the corner and the labor movement is gearing up to elects strong candidates in Oregon.

To kickoff the election cycle, we’re having events throughout the state in August and September to provide our labor allies with resources to bolster the electoral power of working people.

We know that the political strength of the labor movement in Oregon is rooted in our activism, organizing, and volunteer work- but recruiting new volunteers is one of the most persistent challenges of the work we do. The trainings and campaign kickoffs will focus on strategies for mobilizing folks in your union to become motivated and active in keeping our state a leader in the advancement of rights and protections for working people.

Come get the tools you need to effectively recruit volunteers and knock doors this election cycle!

Oregon Strong Voice Summit

2016 Oregon Strong Voice Summit
July 29, 2016
University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon

Oregon Strong Voice is a statewide network of regional alliances between labor unions and community-based organizations. We work together to maximize our collective power at the grassroots level so that we can build a stronger Oregon.

Since our last summit in 2014, we’ve been working at the local level on issues ranging from affordable housing, income inequality, and removing barriers to employment, to fighting anti-immigrant and anti-worker attacks. We’ve also had successes electing strong progressive candidates to local offices.

This summit will be a unique opportunity to convene labor and community partners from throughout the state to share skills and experiences, learn from experts, and re-energize for a vigorous election season and beyond.  There is no cost to attend the summit.

Zoom+Care Protest: Rally for Healthcare Equity!

  • pin Hide Map ZOOM+Care Hawthorne District

Portland-based Zoom+Care is a "fast food medicine," for-profit corporation that is partially owned by the Oregon investment firm, Endeavor Capital. Zoom+ says it is "going to change the way healthcare is being delivered" as it continues it's expansion into the Seattle area, but Zoom+ does not accept Medicare, Medicaid, or Tri-Care patients and they have been accused of "cherry picking" the young and the healthy.

In Oregon, we are fighting for single payer healthcare for all Oregonians, which means a healthcare system in which all of us have equal access to the care and treatment we need. If Zoom+ is allowed to avoid the problems of dealing with poorer, aging patients who have chronic health problems by marketing only to a young and healthy demographic, it will shift care for the poor, disabled, and elderly onto small, local clinics and non-profit providers who will be left with the burden of labor and cost in caring for an older and sicker population of patients, putting stress on their ability to care for all of us.

This is the second Portland sister action to rallies being held in Seattle, where community groups lead by Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action are taking action to prevent the further expansion of Zoom+Care in the Seattle area.

We are taking action here in Portland not only out of solidarity with folks in Seattle, but also because Zoom+ was birthed here in Portland, and so it is important for us here to hold them accountable for their unethical business practices that harm our community, and because holding businesses like Zoom+Care accountable is a step along the way toward access to healthcare for all Oregonians!

Our Jobs, Our Economy: A Labor Forum on the TPP

UA Local 290 Plumbers and Steamfitters, Oregon Fair Trade Campaign, Portland Jobs with Justice, and Oregon AFL-CIO invite you to join us for a forum on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Saturday, May 7th, 1pm

UA Local 290 Plumbers and Steamfitters training hall at 20210 SW Teton Ave, Tualatin OR 97063

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) that would set rules governing approximately 40% of the global economy. It is the largest FTA ever negotiated and the first with an option for non-member countries to join the pact in the future. While the office of the US Trade Representative claims that the TPP would boost the US economy and strengthen labor rights across the Pacific Rim, the reality is quite different. The TPP makes little to no progress on failed labor protections and enforcement from past FTAs, the economic gains to the US would be small if any, and what wealth will be generated by the TPP will be centralized in the hands of multinational corporations and the 1%.

Join us for a discussion with labor leaders about
-The history of past FTAs like NAFTA on workers and the US economy
-Debunking the claims made about US economic gains from the TPP
-The dangers to workers’ rights abroad in the TPP
-What each of us can do to defeat the TPP

Speakers to be announced!

Portland based Zoom+Care, a for-profit corporation, says it is "going to change the way healthcare is being delivered" as it expands to 16 clinics in the Seattle area in 2016. But Zoom does not accept Medicare, Medicaid or Tri-Care patients. They are "cherry picking" the young and healthy while non-profit providers are left to care for an older, sicker population. If Zoom is allowed to avoid the problems of dealing with poorer, aging patients who have chronic health problems by marketing only to a young and healthy demographic, it will shift care for the poor, disabled and elderly to non-profit providers and put financial stress on their ability to care for all of us.
