Robert Blanche is fighting for his life. In 2011, he was diagnosed with hypersensitivity pneumonitis, an inflammation in the lungs that led to pulmonary fibrosis. In August 2018, Robert received his second chance at life with a double lung transplant. However, his recovery has been fraught with complications, and Robert has remained in ICU ever since.
During this challenging time, Robert's wife and infant daughter have been by his side daily, but he has been far away from home and family, including his three adult daughters, his four-year-old daughter, and his three infant grandchildren. Robert's hospital stay has been far extended from the two week average he was told to prepare for, and costs associated with his medical care and living expenses for his wife/caregiver have been tremendous, especially as neither of them have been able to earn an income during this tedious time.
The average lung transplant costs almost $800,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery and his extended stay in the hospital. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
