The biggest economic determinant in a woman’s life is when and if she becomes pregnant. This reality made last week’s leaked Supreme Court draft opinion a devastating blow to workers across the country, while simultaneously confirming what was projected as the worst possible outcome after the court agreed to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. By this Summer, 26 states could move to ban abortion. With this decision, this highly-politicized Supreme Court would reverse nearly 50 years of precedent, explicitly ending federal constitutional protections for abortion. This Saturday, May 14, join workers and activists mobilizing throughout the state to protest the Court’s likely decision. Actions are being held in Ashland, Bend, Eugene, and Portland.
The Oregon Labor Movement believes that women and everyone who can become pregnant have the right to determine what happens to their bodies. The Oregon AFL-CIO passed a resolution, Reproductive Justice and Reproductive Rights are Workers Rights at our 2022 Convention reaffirming that belief because we know that abortion can never be banned, it can only be inaccessible to those who can’t afford to access it.
