Oregon AFL-CIO Weekly Update: True Patriotism
July 25, 2018
True Patriotism in Missouri
National AFL‑CIO President Richard Trumka spoke at the Missouri AFL‑CIO’s 29th Biennial Convention last week, rallying a packed audience of local union leaders and working Missourians in the fight against Prop. A. He recalled the charge that President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered to Americans in the midst of the Great Depression: “True patriotism urges us to build an even more substantial America where the good things of life may be shared by more of us.”
Working people in Missouri are speaking out and mobilizing their neighbors against a corporate-backed attack on our fundamental economic rights. As union leaders gather in St. Louis, the state’s labor movement is continuing to embody the spirit of collective action currently sweeping the country.
Faced with a right-wing “right to work” law passed by the state legislature, working Missourians took the fight to workplaces and living rooms across the state. As Trumka explained:
“You see, the Missouri labor movement defines extraordinary. You needed 100,000 signatures to get right to work on the ballot. You got over 300,000. 213,000 of those were collected by volunteers. Now you are in the process on knocking on hundreds of thousands of doors. Don’t let up. The next three weeks will make the difference.”
Reject Kavanaugh: Union Call-in Day Tomorrow!
President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee has a history of siding with greedy corporations over working people and consumers. Supreme Court justices should protect the rights of all Americans, not just the wealthy and powerful.
If Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed, we can expect:
- More rulings weakening unions and the ability of working people to negotiate together, like Janus v. AFSCME;
- More rulings allowing billionaires and large, greedy corporations to dominate our politics, like Citizens United v. FEC; and
- More rulings that put working people’s health care at risk, like NFIB v. Sebelius.
The Supreme Court needs moderate justices who make rulings on a case-by-case basis, not another justice following a corporate agenda. We cannot afford to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime appointment.
Call 844-899-9913 tomorrow, July 26 and tell Oregon's Senators to stand strong and to keep opposing Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
Red for Feds
Federal employees rallied across the country and in Washington D.C. while countless others showed solidarity by wearing red today as part of the American Federation of Government Employees’ Red for Feds campaign.
The campaign is directed at the Trump administration’s union-busting executive orders. On Friday, May 25, President Trump signed three executive orders. The first two chip away at due process and collective bargaining rights for federal employees, and the third executive order, which impedes employee representation at the job site, is the focus of the lawsuit filed less than a week later. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and other unions have since joined AFGE’s lawsuit – which has also received support from Congressional lawmakers in an amicus brief and bipartisan letter from 132 members of Congress.
Protecting Oregon’s Anti-Profiling Law
Earlier this month, two extremist hate groups turned in the needed signatures to get Measure 105 on the ballot.
If Measure 105 passes, it would throw out Oregon’s sanctuary state law, which has been working for over 30 years to protect Oregonians from unfair profiling.
Getting rid of this law opens the door to serious civil rights violations and more racial profiling of Oregonians, simply because they are perceived to be undocumented immigrants.
Find an event near you or sign up to host one of your own. Together we will canvass local businesses and mobilize communities in support of our campaign. With your help, we can defeat Measure 105.
